This report, produced by the Audit Commission in July 2008 looks at the challenges and opportunities facing England as its population gets older. It aims to help local public services adapt to the needs of an older and more diverse society, and identifies solutions that can be implemented quickly, as well as exploring how councils should plan strategically for the wider challenges ahead.

Carers at the heart of 21st century families and communities: a caring system on your side, a life of your own – Strategy launched by Department of Health

The carers' strategy sets out the Government's short-term agenda and long-term vision for the future care and support of carers

The carers' strategy is underpinned by £255 million to implement some immediate steps alongside with medium and long-term plans.

New commitments in the carers' strategy include: £150 million towards planned short breaks for carers; £38 million towards supporting carers to enter or re-enter the job market and £6 million towards improving support for young carers. Other schemes include the piloting of annual health checks for carers to help them stay well and training for GPs to recognise and support carers. A more integrated and personalised support service for carers will be offered through easily accessible information, targeted training for key professionals to support carers, and pilots to examine how the NHS can better support carers.

Adobe Acrobat - Opens in New Window Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Services (ACAS) guidance on new age discrimination laws

ACAS have published a guide for employers entitled "Age and the workplace". It provides an outline of an employer's obligations under the new rules together with a number of practical tips for ensuring that you comply. It has also developed flow charts summarising the retirement procedure and some precedent letters for employers to use.

Government Consultation of Draft Legislative Programme

The Government - Preparing Britain for the Future - was published as a Green Paper on 14 May 2008 for consultation. It sets out the Government's plans for legislation in next year's Parliamentary session, and supporting non-legislative action. This is an important opportunity for you as a stakeholder to have your say on the Government's priorities and whether these are the right issues on which the Government should focus its efforts.
